Since November, my life has been a whirlwind. I have been given opportunities beyond my wildest expectations, and I have been forced to alter my life style in order to meet my new obligations in the work force.
All while managing a home with 3 boys, 2 cats, a dog, a hamster and a fish.
I’m not complaining and I face these challenges with the utmost gratitude.
But man, there are days when I miss the time to just reconnect with myself.
These past couple of weeks I have been a different person. I have been short with the kids, crabby with my husband, and even “The Fuzz” has gotten on my last nerve – and as I stated in “10 Top reasons why I like my dog more than my kids,” this never happens.
Waking in one of my crankiest moods yet, my husband carefully approached me and recommended that I go for a run to clear my head – while facing the winter months, it has been a long time since I worked in a run.
So I decided to head to my local gym and to check out their offerings. When I first walked in, I was completely intimidated, as I have not stepped foot into a gym since my early twenties.
I met with the salesperson, toured the facility, and hit the treadmill.
Four miles later, I signed on the dotted line.
I cannot begin to tell you how this has altered my life. For years, working out has been about maintaining my body. But for the first time, it is now about reconnecting to my mind and spirit.
I had forgotten how happy running makes me – I actually crave the release of the endorphins and the high that I get when I’m done.
And I even worked up the courage to try Yoga, and I loved it. This is particularly interesting because I have not been able to quiet my mind to save my soul.
It is so important to find something in your life that genuinely makes you happy. We as women spend so much of our time caring for others, that we often forget to care for ourselves.
Perhaps it is working out, reading a book, or having lunch with a girlfriend. You need to carve out some time to enjoy the little things in life that truly represent who you are.
Give yourself permission to empower yourself with a healthy body, mind and spirit. Reconnect with yourself and fully indulge in the beauty of you!
I don’t have the time to work out. As a matter of fact, there are things that are going to the wayside so I can fit this into my day.
But I also can’t afford to not work out. It’s my crutch, my go to place for reconnecting with me again. It is my therapy.
And once in a while, it just needs to be about me.
